Venus (2019)
A Venus of Willendorf mascotte maneuvers through the Museum of Natural History in Vienna, having cheeky interactions with visitors, taking impromptu dance breaks and lots of selfies. When she finally makes her way to the small statuette in the epicenter of the museum, she passionately addresses her painful status as a replica to her older sister (and the visitors around.)
Documented with a camcorder to imitate the spectator’s gaze and further blur the boundaries between fact and fiction, the video shows the harsh subjugation of a valuable artefact to the gaze of tourists and the thin line between scholarly consideration and capitalist entertainment.
Performance: Türkan Vural
Costume design: Lizzy van Megen
Editing: Levi van Gelder
(video — 5:14 min.)
